OUGD602 - SB01 - Competitor Research

In order to create a successful brand for myself, I decided to look at a with a similar style that have been successful in the industry so far.

Giovanni Murolo is a designer based in Berlin, Germany. He makes excellent use of typography and the foundations of type design including scale, repetition, and placement.

Here are a few examples of his work:

As you can see, the focus of his work is conceptual and functional, instead of the other route of using bold aesthetic to overpower the concept of a piece of work. This style of work is fairly abstract and wouldn't be common in corporate design, which is why my focus has shifted to applying to smaller studios for work, as I feel you would be able to express yourself creatively far more than in a corporate studio where you don't have as much power and freedom over projects.

I also looked at miscellaneous designs I thought resonated with my design style:

I also looked at numerous graphic styles that influence my work and I enjoy. It helped to look at this work without over-analysing why it was successful or why I enjoyed it as it enabled me to remain true to what I wanted to do, but take inspiration from the people I follow. Creating an identity for yourself that you won’t outgrow is difficult, so through research of all the smaller and larger designers made me come to the conclusion that I needed a brand that would be able to constantly evolve with the kind of work I was creating.
